Comparing Extensions: Which Ones are Best for You?

When it comes to extensions, there is an endless variety of methods, brands, price ranges and quality. In fact, it’s almost impossible to know where to begin when you’re evaluating which type of extensions may be right for you.

That’s why I wanted to keep things simple and break it down for you using my simple 3-factor approach. When considering extensions, you’re typically going to consider permanent (tape in, iTip, Handtied, Keratin), temporary (clip-in’s or off brand Halo’s) or HALOCOUTURE by HalobyJess. Each category has pros and cons, but I’m going to compare them for you based on Customization, Maintenance and Price.

So let’s start with Customization

Up until a couple of years ago, if you wanted quality, customized extensions, permanent options were the only way to go. And while that’s still a popular choice, we’ve come a long way in bridging the gap.

Temporary extensions are still the least customizable option as they vary in quality, hair type and the ability to color them. These are extensions you’re purchasing yourself and then taking into a salon for customization if it allows.

With permanent extensions once you choose your method, you’ll make your install appointment that will typically last 4-5 hours. This will typically include coloring and cutting your hair AND your extensions to ensure a seamless blend. With permanent extensions, you’ll have a stylist involved in the process from start to finish.

Now for the gap I was talking about. HALOCOUTURE extensions are a great option if you’re look for a happy medium. They are less permanent (aka removable), but the quality and ability to customize is much more sophisticated than your typical temporary extensions. When you purchase a HalobyJess, we will either have you come to the salon or conduct a virtual consult where we will choose the Halo that fits you best. From there, we will customize it to match your cut and color seamlessly so that you while you’re wearing it, no one would ever know. I mean, that’s the goal, right?

So, what’s the difference between HALOCOUTURE extensions and permanent extensions other than the 5 hour long install appointment and permanent nature of the extensions? That brings me to our other two comparison factors: Price and Maintenance.

Let’s touch on where temporary extensions fit in here first. These extensions are typically going to range from $50-$400 depending on the quality and how many you need to accommodate your hair’s thickness. While that price point may sound enticing, keep in mind that when it comes to maintenance, you’ll most likely have to replace your extensions 2-3 times per year. Plus, since you’re buying them direct to consumer, that price won’t include any kind of customization that can be done.

Permanent extensions are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Depending on the method you choose permanent extensions range anywhere from $1200-$4000. Other factors that play a role in this pricing are how many extensions are needed, the brand and like I mentioned, the method being used. This will, however, cover the customization necessary to make them look perfect. For maintenance, you’re looking at a “tightening” appointment every 5-8 weeks that will range from $150-$400. Eventually after 6 – 12 months, you’ll need a new set to keep the hair looking fresh. There’s no question that permanent options are an investment.

Lastly, let’s talk about HALOCOUTURE. Halos range from $400-$900 which includes all of the customization and even maintenance tools to help them last as long as possible. Typically, I see a Halo lasting anywhere from 1-2 years, but I’ve had some clients have their Halo up to 5 years depending on how often they are using it. Also, since halos are not as permanent, you can purchase more than one style and constantly switch up your look. And when you purchase a Halo through HalobyJess and my team of certified Halo consultants, you have unlimited access to us through text, email, and the website. Plus, we’re constantly sending out emails and posting tips to our HalobyJess Instagram channel to help you take full advantage of your extensions.

As you can see, the options are endless, and I hope this helps you narrow in on the option that’s best for you and your lifestyle.
