We all have hair that is unique with its own special needs but, there are a handful of tips and practices that everyone can be using in their daily regimen that will make a huge difference long term. These are the things that I touch on with each client when they are trying to diagnose their hair struggles or make their hair healthier.
#1 Shower Do’s and Don’ts
The purpose of washing our hair is to CLARIFY, CLEANSE, & CONDITION. Part of keeping your hair healthy means that you need to balance the pH of your hair. Your hair has a natural pH level it sits at where it is the healthiest which is a 4.5-5.5. Lightening our hair and using shampoo’s that are too alkaline will push our hair out of this delicate state where it is the strongest!
Unite Hair shampoos are all pH balancing which will give you the baseline you need to build on to ensure your hair is absorbing and retaining the nutrients it needs.
Step 1 is to Clarify which @unite_hair Weekender Shampoo to remove all build up of product and flakiness from the scalp and hair.
Step 2 is to Shampoo with a Gentle pH balancing shampoo such as the 7 Second Shampoo from Unite
Step 3 is to Condition and Treat your hair with a Hydrating , Nutrient rich conditioner or swap out for a Treatment Mask to address Moisturizing or Repair.
The few No-No’s I would advise against for the sake of damage is…
• excessive use of purple or blue shampoo more than once a week or for some twice a month
• shampoos that are not Sulfate free, Paraben free, and Sodium Chloride free, or too high pH
• clarifying shampoos that are NOT gentle , this is one product You cannot afford to not research first
• keratin mask use for longer than 2 months at a time
The shower is A crucial step to either dramatically change your hair for the good or for the bad.
#2. Minimize the Tension on Your Hair
Your hair is only so strong and for some of us even though the weight of whatever we are doing is very light… The repetition of having the constant tension still can cause breakage and stress on the hair
An indicator that something you are doing or wearing is causing breakage is if the breakage matches in the same place on both sides of your head or where it is breaking is about the same length around your head, and we can’t forget the breakage all the way around the hairline if it is the same length.
Here are some things that you may want to stop doing in order to remedy and identify what the cause May Be
• A Bun or Ponytail no matter how loose – in the same place (switch to a braid)
• Clip in Extensions
• Permanent Extensions (consider a different method or take a break)
• Headbands
• Elastics instead of Fabric hair ties or Bobbles
.
If you do none of these things then the breakage has to do with the strength of your hair which is a topic for another day 😁
#3. Proper Scalp Care
Proper scalp care is using the right products ad steps when your hair is dry and also in the shower.
When you wash your hair in addition to using your regular shampoo and conditioner if you were experiencing an oily scalp or dandruff, then I recommend to everyone to use the Unite Weekender which is a clarifying shampoo to use every other wash! On your Weekender days you will first use your regular shampoo, rinse, and then shampoo again with the Weekender shampoo to give your scalp the reset it needs and you will see a massive difference of how long you can go between washes!
On Day two, three, four etc., you will use your Ensemble Score brush to exfoliate your scalp and drag your oils from your scalp through your mid strand to ends. You will not need to use nearly as much dry shampoo and with a scalp that can breathe, you’ll be able to go much longer between washes.
Training your scalp takes commitment but giving it a good clean start makes all the difference!
