My Nighttime Hair Routine

Have you ever seen a girl with perfectly tousled curls walk into Starbucks and you can’t help but try and figure out what the heck she did to make it look so flawless? You spend the whole time waiting for your vanilla latte trying to work up the courage to ask her what her secret is and when you finally do she smiles and says, “I actually haven’t washed my hair in three days. I just woke up, threw in some texturizing spray and ran out the door!” Well, I would like to think that girl watched my Youtube video where I walk through (in detail) my nightly hair routine.

I know what you’re thinking because I hear women say all the time how their hair is different and it would be impossible to leave the house without spending at least thirty minutes on it. Girl, I hear you, but trust me when I say I have a few secrets that are about to change your mornings for life and it all starts the night before.

So typically the first day I wash my hair I wear it straight and then on the second day it’s all about the curl. Now, I don’t have time to curl my hair every single morning so until I decide to wash it again, my goal is to make it last. First, I wish this wasn’t the case, but my hair gets super greasy when I sleep. Why? Well, I sweat from my scalp. Isn’t that a lovely thought? But it’s true! Before I go to sleep, I take a little bit of dry shampoo (this one is my favorite) and spray the roots right around the halo of my head. This will help ensure that grease doesn’t get too out of control while I sleep.

Now, not all of us have this “sweat in your sleep” problem and actually have super dry, naturally curly or damaged hair. In this case, skip the dry shampoo and substitute oil. I know lathering your hair with oil seems counterproductive, but I promise it’s essential if you have this particular type of hair. Just make sure the oil does not have a lot of silicone and only use one or two pumps for your whole head. Unlike the dry shampoo that only stays at your roots around the crown of your head, you will want to run the oil through your hair, mid strand to ends. I like this oil that you can find on amazon.

Now, here comes the fun part. Some of you may have heard me talk about the pineapple style before, but for those of you who haven’t, it’s exactly how it sounds. Literally imagine how the top of a pineapple looks and substitute your hair in that image. Let me explain. First, you will need a scrunchie. It can be any scrunchie you would like, the brand doesn’t matter (although if you watch the bachelor and know who Kaitlyn Bristowe is, her Dew scrunchie line is pretty cute). Anyways, once you have your scrunchie, you’re going to flip your hair upside down and put your hair in a super loose ponytail on top of your head. Loose is the keyword here because if it’s too tight it can get greasy. This helps keep all the hair off your neck, maintains your curls and adds a ton of volume. If you have short hair and you can’t fit it all up there, take the mohawk part of your hair and put that up. The bottom will be covered anyway. This isn’t full proof and you may still need to touch it up a little bit by adding some curls around your face, but you’ll spend five minutes on it instead of thirty. Then, like the girl from Starbucks said, add some texturizing spray (here’s my favorite) and you’re good to go!

Now, if you have extensions or even just super long hair, you have a couple of options for what is going to work best. If you put it in that loose ponytail, but have 18 inches worth of hair, you may wake up with a knotty mess. Instead, separate your hair into two  parts and loosely braid both sides all the way down. This will keep your curl in tact, but will also prevent it from getting tangled while you sleep. Another option is use your scrunchie and instead of leaving your hair in a ponytail on the top of your head, twist it into a bun one or two times. This will give you a bouncier look in the morning. The third option is a little bit embarrassing, but it’s essentially a combination of the two. You’re going to have to check out the Youtube video for that one. Save it for a time you’re really feeling crazy.

If you don’t usually wear your hair curly, unfortunately, these methods are a bit more difficult for straight hair because you are always susceptible to kinks. That being said, there a couple of leave in treatments I would highly recommend, regardless of your hair style and texture. The first treatment is oil based. You can take any oil based mask with no keratin (except coconut oil – put that on your skin, but not your hair) and lather your hair in it. You can leave it in all night and wash it out the next day. The second treatment, and my personal favorite is Olaplex treatment. For this treatment, you’ll take Olaplex No.3 (you can find it here), dump it into a small spray bottle, fill the rest with water and spray it all on your hair before you go to sleep. The results are amazing and you’ll honestly feel like you just left the salon.

I hope these tips are helpful and leave your hair feeling bouncy, beautiful and flawless. Before you know it, you’ll be that girl at Starbucks bragging about how you just woke up with your hair looking like you just spent the last three hours on it.
